Gertrude Stein and her Fords
«The American writer Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) moved to Paris in 1903. Stein was not only famous for her novels, but also for her Fords. She often drove on trips in France with friends like Picasso. In 1907 she met her future partner Alice B. Toklas. After the death of Gertrude Stein, Toklas published an highly original book that mixes road trips and recipes under the title The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook. Here we bring a reprint of chapter 6 featuring those rides in Fords only interrupted by meals. The most famous recipe of the book was called «Hashisch Fudge», a mixture of fruit, nuts, spices, and «canibus sativa». This lent her name to the range of cannabis concoctions called Alice B. Toklas brownies. The cookbook has not been out of print since it was published.»
